I can’t be the only one at the Thanksgiving table wondering why ambrosia salad is on the guest list. Table space is a hot commodity on a holiday where eating is a sport and seconds are mandatory. So why is it we still prepare certain dishes that go untouched when that real-estate could be occupied by updated deliciousness or better yet some gorgeous Persimmon & Copal candles?
Family traditions that pertain to holidays are like stories you’ve heard a thousand times. You absolutely know how they end, a little bit of arguing and a whole lot of food, but when you try to remember how certain aspects of the tradition started…stumped. Who decided we had to have Ambrosia salad, or other unpleasant dishes on Thanksgiving. Why do we have to road trip to the relative that lives on Mars? These questions really had me thinking; why aren’t traditions revisited and updated for the better? I’m sure it wasn’t your great great aunt’s intention to give indigestion to dinner guests for the next 40 years. So much like the rest of the meal we will prepare on Thanksgiving, this year we are creating our Family Thanksgiving Tradition from scratch! Pretty much everything but the turkey is getting a facelift.
I began my Thanksgiving Tradition reconnaissance while shooting our Fall Editorial at the VOLUSPA headquarters. My team and I discussed where we go to celebrate, who we toast with, what we eat, and our love for pie. Oh the Pumpkin Pie. I knew we had to have one for our shoot, Susie Cakes makes a damn good Pumpkin pie. It’s just not Thanksgiving without pie, an aspect of the Tradition we all agreed can stay. We then discussed Turkey preparations - I swear by Thomas Keller's 'My FAVORITE ROAST TURKEY', It’s a total knockout! We laughed about relatives behaviors, the need for an updated car ride playlist that didn’t include a Christmas song, and Troy chimed in about Thanksgiving Day Football game. Minnesota is playing this year, the game will certainly be on.
My girls can’t wait for Thanksgiving to arrive. They are already scheming their contribution to the feast, COOKIES! With the date approaching quickly, we are fine-tuning the rest of our menu and prepping the house! I can’t wait to toss on some cozy cashmere and relax with my girls. I’m really excited to create new traditions with them that they will want to carry on, but most importantly I’m thrilled that together we will shape the tradition from the start.
Give Thanks, Give Love, Give Light.
